YouTube outlier: what it is, how it is measured and how to find them

31 ago 2026 · 5 min read

A YouTube outlier is a video that performs far above what its channel normally does. Not the most-viewed video on the platform: the one that breaks the average of its own creator. If you searched the term because you saw it in vidIQ, a tutorial or a creators' Discord, here is what it means and what it is actually good for.

Outlier does not mean viral. A 40,000-view video can be a huge outlier, and a 3-million-view video may not be one at all.

What outlier means on YouTube

The word comes from statistics: an outlier is a data point that falls outside the pattern. On YouTube, the pattern is a channel's usual performance (its average views, its audience size) and the outlier is the video that shoots past it.

A channel with 20,000 subscribers that gets 2,000 views per video and suddenly posts one that hits 120,000 has an outlier at 60 times its average. That video found something (topic, title, thumbnail, promise) the rest of the channel was not touching.

3M views 12M-sub channel · average 2.5M Normal for that channel. Teaches you nothing new.
120K views 20K-sub channel · average 2K 60x its average. This is an outlier.

How a YouTube outlier is measured

There are two common approaches, and it helps to know which one each tool uses:

  • Multiplier over the channel average. Video views divided by the average views of the last N videos. This is what vidIQ shows as an "outlier score" and what most extensions use. It works, but it depends on which N you pick and on whether the channel has changed size.
  • Views to subscribers (MOL). Views divided by the channel's subscribers at the time of measuring. It does not need the channel's history and can be computed on any video you see in the feed. It is the base of what we use at OutlierLabs, which we call MOL: it starts from that ratio and adds other values of our own that correct what views alone do not tell you. The result is more realistic (a video with bought or inflated views does not score as an outlier) and it is not affected by the change YouTube is making in how views are counted, now from the very first second. Which values they are and how they combine is not something we publish. More on the outlier score.

Neither is "the right one". Both point at the same thing: separating what is normal for a channel from what is not.

Why creators care about outliers

Because they are the cheapest way to find out what your niche wants to watch right now. A viral video from a 10-million-sub channel is a poor reference: its audience was already there before publishing. An outlier from a channel your size is a good one, because the video had to earn its views without a subscriber cushion.

If you make personal finance videos with 8,000 subscribers, a video that got 90,000 views on a 15,000-sub channel tells you far more than one with 4 million on a bank's channel. The first is a recipe you can repeat; the second is not.

Ten outliers from comparable channels teach you three things: which topics have unmet demand, which title promises work, and what kind of thumbnail is winning the click in that niche.

How to find outliers on YouTube

Three ways, from least to most convenient:

  • By hand. Open a channel's Videos tab, sort by popular and compare against what it normally does. It works, but it is slow and you only see one channel at a time.
  • With an extension. A Chrome extension computes the ratio on every video you see in the feed or in search and flags the ones that stand out. The OutlierLabs extension does this locally, with no account and no server.
  • With an explorer. A database of outliers already detected, filterable by niche, language, channel size and date. That is what lives inside OutlierLabs and what tools like vidIQ or outlier.so offer, each with its own metric.

The tool comparison is in YouTube outlier tools compared.

And after you find one

Finding the outlier is the easy half. What gets results is understanding why it worked (hook, structure, title, thumbnail) and adapting it to your channel without copying it. OutlierLabs starts from the transcript to break those down, then builds a script and thumbnails for your channel from what already worked.

Frequently asked questions

Is a YouTube outlier always a good video? No. It can be a weak video with a title that hit a hot topic. That is why you check retention and comments before imitating it.

From what number is it an outlier? There is no official threshold. At OutlierLabs we flag outliers from MOL 10, and call them very strong from 30. Other tools use 3x or 5x over the channel average.

Does it work for Shorts? Yes, but compare Shorts with Shorts. Mixing formats inflates or sinks the ratio.

Are outlier and viral the same? No. Viral is many views in absolute terms. Outlier is breaking the normal of one channel.
